The girls in the photograph are dancers as shown by the anklets of small bells they are wearing that jingle as their feet hit the floor in time to the music.

courtesan can never become a woman.’  The Urdu word, tawaif,  
translated as courtesan, is defined in at least one Urdu dictionary as “dancing 
girl, a prostitute; a female singer.”  
BECAUSE OF THIS ,NO WOMEN IN INDIA WAS READY TO ACT IN FILMS OR SING SONGS TO AN AUDIENCE IN 1900 -1930 PERIOD.THE FIRST FILM MADE IN INDIA HAD MALES DRESSED AS FEMALE ACTORS
