Silambam still sticks around in Madurai

MADURAI: Silambam, the traditional martial art of the state, is changing with the times. The combat form using bamboo sticks has found a new following among several students in Madurai city as they find it useful for several reasons. Several private schools and even colleges in the city encourage students, particularly girls, to take up stick fight.

 Silambam, also known as silambattam, has more than 2,000 years of history. Now, apart from its utility as a self-defence skill, silambam is practised to boost self-confidence. Regular practice also promotes a healthy lifestyle.

 "Many institutions and individuals have started showing interest in learning the art. The number of masters (asaan) and students in the city are increasing every year. Currently, there are more than 10 silambam associations in the state. Madurai alone has more than 100 masters. At least, 10 state-level competitions are conducted, mostly in south Tamil Nadu. Persons of all age group are keen about learning it," said K Sheik Usman, 65, a reputed master.

 "My physical and mental powers have increased since I started learning silambam. I have been learning it for a year now. It has also helped me to build self-confidence," said L Susmitha, a final-year English literature student at Sri Meenakshi Government Arts College for Women. Around 60 more girls are learning along with her.

 U Bowsiya Begam, a final-year Maths student, from the same college, said that she and her friends finished first in a couple of state-level competitions. "Many institutions have come forward to teach the art. More than boys, girls turn up in large numbers to learn it in schools. College girls are also joining," said R Karthigai Jothi, a Silambam master, employed by TVS primary and high school.

 S Sheik Ibrahim Shaw, another master based in the city, said there is a growing interest in for silambam. "Both institutions and students are want to learn the art. I train students in a couple of private schools in the city," he said.

 A recent Silambam class started by Naanal Nanbargal, a youth association, is also getting good response. Both youth, including professionals from various fields, are learning the art. "Youth should learn the traditional art and pass it on to the next generation. Learning the art boosts one's self-confidence, stamina and physical strength," the members said.
