This is plate 15 from James Fergusson's book 'Ancient Architecture in Hindostan'. Many people consider Udaipur to be the most picturesque, romantic city in India. Set in a valley and planned around three lakes, it was the capital of a Rajput kingdom until 1818, when the British took control of the city. The Lake Palace was built by Maharaja Jagat Singh II, in 1746, on an island at the centre of Pichola Lake. Today it houses a luxury hotel and is a famous tourist attraction.
