The Thug School of Industry, Jubbulpore
This chromolithograph is taken from plate 21 of William Simpson's 'India: Ancient and Modern'. This school was set up in Jabalpur for children whose fathers had been imprisoned or killed, having been suspected as members of the Thugee cult. The Thugees were supposed to be followers of the goddess Kali, robbing and garroting people in her honour. At the school, the children were taught practical skills, particularly rope- and carpet-making, in the hope that such skills and the discipline of the school generally would enable them to cut their ties with the cult and take their place in a wider society. In 1867 carpets made at the school were sent to the Paris Exhibition.
