Portrait of Dr John Murray

The 1860s saw an increasing interest, both scientific and political, in the diverse ethnic composition of the Indian subcontinent. An official request to furnish details and photographs of the races resident in various districts for display at the London International Exhibition of 1862 was responded to by many amateur photographers in government employ. This is one of a series of portraits of Eastern Bengal types by a so-far unidentified photographer, which was received by the India Office in London in the early 1860s.
