An evening with women from the gramophone era

CHENNAI: It is like a homecoming for musician and composer, Vidya Shah, who will be performing on Friday at the Museum Theatre in Egmore as part of the Gharana Indian music festival organised by the Prakriti Foundation.

"I was born in Chennai. I share a bond with this city as a large part of my family is based here," said Shah. The Delhi-based musician is bringing her concert and exhibition 'Women on Record' to Chennai for the first time and aims to "give the audience an evening filled with interesting slices from the history of classical music."

The performance will highlight the contributions of forgotten women performers from the gramophone era, such as Gauhar Jan, Begum Akhtar and Ajanibai Malpekar, who created new genres of music with their singing by breaking all kinds of superstitions and taboos. "We use archival images and map places across India and abroad to make the project connect with the people," she said.

Shah, who loves composing and writing poetry, began her training with Carnatic music, and later learnt Hindustani music. "Being a performer, I am drawn to the idea of versatility. My work represents research and narratives around music, the 1857 struggle and mystic poetry," said Shah.

Post the festival, Shah's pan-India production to mark the centenary of Begum Akhtar will premiere in July, followed by a performance at Brussels. "I look at interesting ways of presenting music, something that the audience will cherish beyond a concert," said Shah.
